History

The Prosper Valley School Trust was born from one parent’s extraordinary generosity and vision when the school became a centralized campus in the 1991–92 school year. With two children enrolled, this parent was deeply invested in enriching the school experience for all students. A passionate supporter of the arts, the parent-turned-patron believed in funding “extras” — programs and opportunities that inspired curiosity and creativity — rather than basic budget items like textbooks or building needs. The benefactor's early donations supported performing arts through the Vermont Council on the Arts, class trips to places like the Boston Aquarium and Plymouth Plantation, and other experiences that expanded learning beyond the classroom.

Recognizing that lasting impact would require broader support, the parent worked with the school principal — and later, with the help of another parent who was an attorney — to formally establish the TPVS Trust. From the start, the Trust became a vehicle for families and community members to join together in supporting the “extras” that make The Prosper Valley School experience so distinctive.

For more than three decades, the Trust has carried forward this founding spirit of generosity, ensuring that students continue to benefit from programs in the arts, sciences, leadership, and outdoor learning. Today, we rely on the same commitment from parents, alumni, and friends of the school to sustain this legacy and keep alive the vision of those who began it.

Board of Trustees

For the past five years, Emily Harrington has been the dedicated Secretary of the Prosper Valley School Trust. She is known for her careful attention to detail, thoughtful approach, and ability to clarify complex issues by asking the right questions at the right time. These qualities have made her an invaluable voice in ensuring the Trust’s work remains clear and effective. A longtime resident of North Pomfret and mother of two sons, Emily is deeply connected to the community. She treasures both the history and the families that make this hamlet such a special place to call home.

As an extraordinary teacher who is still referenced around the halls of TPVS, Barb has made a lasting impact on her students, the school and the broader community. Throughout her career, Barb welcomed new students, teachers, principals, and school transitions with grace and steady dedication. Known for founding academically-integrated, community- based programs such as building intergenerational relationships with senior citizens, school- wide food drives and bringing The Vermont Red Clover Book literacy program to the K-4 students, Barb brings both deep institutional knowledge and an abiding love for the community to her role on the Trust.

Kate became involved with the Trust through her three sons’ time at TPVS, where she was struck by the campus, the ingenuity of the curriculum, and the rich sense of community the school fostered. An educator herself, Kate believes every student deserves the chance to build skills that carry them well beyond the classroom. As Treasurer, she is helping guide the Trust into a new era of growth and opportunity. One of her favorite reminders of TPVS’s impact comes from simply driving by the school and hearing the joyful sounds of children playing in the fields, exploring the outdoor classroom, and gazing at the stars from the observatory.
